Generally, the surgery is only recommended for people who are grossly obese, when diet and exercise have failed.
Are you a candidate for gastric bypass surgery? Find out what to expect and the benefits and risks involved.
It’s always best to lose weight through a healthy diet and regular physical activity. But if you’re among those who have tried and can’t lose the excess weight that’s causing your health problems, weight-loss (bariatric) surgery may be an option.
Gastric bypass, which changes the anatomy of your digestive system to limit the amount of food you can eat and digest, is the favored bariatric surgery in the United States. Most surgeons prefer this procedure because it’s safer and has fewer complications than other available weight-loss surgeries. It can provide long-term, consistent weight loss if accompanied with ongoing behavior changes.
Gastric bypass isn’t for everyone with obesity, however. It’s a major procedure that poses significant risks and side effects and requires permanent changes in your lifestyle.
Who is gastric bypass surgery for?
Generally, gastric bypass surgery is reserved for people who are unable to achieve or maintain a healthy weight through diet and exercise, are severely overweight, and who have health problems as a result. Gastric bypass may be considered if:
* Your body mass index (BMI) is 40 or higher (extreme obesity).
* Your BMI is 35 to 39.9 (obesity), and you have a serious weight-related health problems such as diabetes or high blood pressure.
Gastric bypass surgery doesn’t replace the need for following a healthy diet and regular physical activity program. In fact, the success of the surgery depends in part on your commitment to following the guidelines given to you about diet and exercise. As you consider weight-loss surgery, make sure that you make every effort to exercise, change your eating habits and adjust any other lifestyle factors that have contributed to your excess weight.

I’m sure for some people its a last chance opportunity to try and deal with the symptoms of health problems caused by obesity. Unfortunately, if the person doesn’t also make lifestyle changes, the weight loss will be temporary.

if a person cannot lose the weight on their own it is a good way to be healthier. Who cares how they take it off as long as they do. What works for some do not work for everyone and we should understand that.

This surgery is for people who have honestly tried everything else and have found that nothing worked. My daughter did it. It is a radical change in your life. It was the best choice for her. She lost 100 pounds. Even though she can eat much less than other people she is still overweight. It was hard to get insurance approval. You spend days in the hospital. You can only eat a tiny amount at a time. There are some foods you will never be able to eat again. You still have to work out every day. This is by no means an easy solution. Her weight was going to kill her with high blood pressure, diabetes, bad knees. All of that has resolved. Bottom line, if you can do it with diet an exercise then that is the best way. If not the surgery could save your life.

Sounds like an easy way out to me, I know I can loose weight w/o having surgery to do so. PPL get so obsessed with thinking food is a way to cure loneliness, and gives comfort. That is so pathetic. Best thing is a healthy diet. eating small meals more often, and using vitamin supplements, and excersize.

Eating good foods like organics and light exercise not the body building type but walking and some light jogging.

First of all you have to be over 100 lbs overweight to be considered for surgery. Second, its hardly the ‘easy’ way out since its major surgery leaves a huge scar, limits what you can eat for the rest of your life, makes you throw up or have bowel leakage. If that sounds easier to you than giving up doughnuts that’s a problem.
Surgery is for people who have tried everything and gained it back, and we are talking hundreds of pounds here, not that final five or the twenty you have had since the baby.
The morbidly obese have many different problems and they are only beginning to study this without backing from a diet plan or drug paying for it. Blaming this soley on diet and exercise and willpower may not be a valid for all these people as formerly thought. New information is coming out all the time. In the meantime I have to say that still, 95% of all dieters gain back the weight they lose, and add even more, I don’t know of anyother procedure or recommendation that a doctor would make that has a 95% failure rate. This problem needs more work.
Again please understand that we are talking obese here, not the few pounds most of us can put on or take off with a bit of work. Thats just not medically in the same catagory.

i think a requirement to have this surgery done is being 100 lbs overweight. (or atleast this is wut i’ve heard) this surgery is only for peopl who are severely obese, not for the self concious who want to lose a couple lbs cuz they think they’re too fat. People often resort to this surgery as a final attempt of losing the weight when it is a real life threatening issue. It’s have it done or die from possible heart failure etc. Gastric surgery is a drastic alternative at losing a large amount of weight. Besides, if sumone weighs like 750 lbs i don’t find it easy for them to do excercise or go on a diet at such an advanced point of obesity.

There is no right way to do it. There is only the right way for you to do it. I don’t think that people who choose gastro bypass are taking the easy way out. There is a total commitment to lifestyle change that you must make when choosing that procedure and if you screw up you can become violently ill. Gastric Bypass really is only a feasible option for people who are 100+ pounds overweight. If you are just slightly overweight then I woul recommend diet and exercise. Good Luck!!!

For some people, it’s a last resort, for others, it’s convenient. There was a documentary on Gastric surgery on MTV called True Life which followed the lives of 3 potential recepients of the procedure. One young man tried to eat well but felt victim to old junk food habits and didn’t seem to care much since he was getting the surgery. The other people ate well and exercised without having significant weight lost. Ultimately, it depends on the person and their mentality towards their weight.

It takes a complete ignorance of healthy eating and exercise to become obese. For obese people surgery is the only option. If working out or eating right was an option they wouldn’t be in that condition in the first place. I say let them have their surgery, whatever makes ‘em happy, right?

I think it is better to lose the weight on your own. Even after you have the sugery , u have to watch whawt u eat.
February 10th, 2010 at 7:30 am
You have to be morbidly obese to have that type of surgery done, besides it is risky, as with all surgical procedures. If you can do it with reduction of calories and increase in exercise and be successful, then thats great! Sometimes people cant see another way out and they get frustrated because everytime they try it just gets worse. People get depressed about being so heavy and say screw it and eat to feel better, because that IS what works for them.

Hi,
I’ve tried so many different diets in the last 10 years that I can say now, they don’t work!
A few months ago, I came across a great product for weight loss and like many others I was skeptical about it. But I really wanted to lose weight and I tried it. The results were excellent and I lost 20 pounds in 2 months. I felt fantastic and I dropped another 5 pounds safely. That’s why I recommend you check this product at
http://www.ezunderstand.info where they have a free trial and you only pay 6.95$ shipping and handling.
Good luck!

gastro band is only used as a last resort as gastric bypass surgery. You have to go through pchych evaluations, thorough health exams and be over 100 lbs.to qualify.People just cannot get one because they are taking the easy way out.It takes a total new mindset to follow thru with new eating habits and excercise or it’ll fail and you’ll gain the weight back.if you don’t follow the aftercare of this surery, you’ll also get sicker.hope this clarifies the procedure for you.

You have to apply for gastro. You have to be severely overweight for them to even consider it. Alot of people get turned down for it, so no, if you are just mildly overweight then that is not an option, and your should do like you were saying eat a healthy controlled diet.
February 10th, 2010 at 3:16 pm
I personally feel that it is an easy way out for people that are 50- 100lbs overweight. If you are mildly overweight I would suggest that you do it the old fashion way.
It may challenge you but you can say that you didn’t give it your all and put the work in that it took to do it.

I worked for Curves for years. AMERICA is fat! Cardio and diet is the best way. If your body only burns 1,200 calories a day and you eat 2,500 + you will get FAT!!!!!! you body stores extra. If you cut down to 1,000 you’ll loose weight. There lots a food you can eat that will fill you up and you’ll loose weight. Cardio for at least 15-20 min three time a week will make a huge difference. lest say your body burns 1,200 calaories a day and you eat that amount, you’ll maintain your weight, if you increase your activity, maybe burn an extra 200 calories, you can loose weight or be able to eat 200 more!
