Suggestions For Weight Loss In Dog.?
by admin - February 28th, 2010. Filed under: Natural Weight Loss.so i rescued my dog and he was overweight when i got him. The vet said he really should only lose 5-7 pounds to be an optimal weight. I am feeding him California Natural chicken and rice, which they do not have a weight control formula in. I was wondering if lowering the amount of food he is fed and giving him plenty of exercise is sufficient enough for him to lose the weight he needs to.
ps. California Natural does come in a weight control formula, but it is lamb and rice and he is allergic to lamb.

More exercise, a little less food. Don’t expect fast results, but keep at it and he’ll come out fine. I have a rescue dog who was in poor shape when I got him, and regular walks and the right amount of food worked out great for him. I think a lot of rescues just weren’t getting the right stuff before you got them. Careful with the recommendations for portion size on the bag. Some dog foods seriously overestimate the portions. My 55 lb moderately active dog gets two cups daily of dry food(around 1000 calories total), a hint of canned salmon, sometimes a bit of olive oil, and very few treats. His weight has been consistent for almost 2 years on that, and he has more muscle than he did when I got him. If the dog is getting food regularly, he won’t starve. If he gets thinner, feed a bit more, if he gains again, feed a bit less.

Feed him the recommended amount for his optimal weight. If his weight doesn’t change then you adjust the amount you feed him. You don’t want to underfeed. As treats you can give him some cooked green beans a day and that will fill him up a little bit. Don’t overdo the green beans though because they can cause him to go to the bathroom more often.

my sister’s dog had to lose 30 lbs. before the vet would do the surgery he needed on his leg. they just cut back on his food a bit and took him for lots of walks! it only took a few months! with bad weather coming (depending where you live) you may want to invest in a used treadmill (ii got mine from craigslist) so you can walk your dog on the lousiest of days.
